The morning banana diet promises to lose 1 to 5 kilograms in a week, without any special sacrifice or investment. This is exactly why it became very popular after it was introduced by the Japanese Hitoshi Watanabe in the book of the same name “Morning Banana Diet”.
It sounds simple: in the morning you can eat only bananas and drink water at room temperature for breakfast, while during the rest of the day you can eat any food.
Is everything really that simple?
After numerous failed attempts to lose weight, Watanabe decided to combine in the book his experiences from previous diets and the scientific facts that his wife Sumiko, a pharmacist by profession, had acquired during research into preventive medicine.
They created a weight loss method that they called the morning banana diet and it immediately delighted everyone who hates to exercise. Namely, obese people are always advised to burn calories by exercising, and Watanabe freed them from that painful morning duty and provided them with a simple solution: they should only eat raw bananas with a glass of water as soon as they get up and not eat anything until lunch. Bananas simply contain resistant starch, which actively promotes weight loss.
Namely, not all types of starch are equal. Starch is divided into digestible and resistant starch. Resistant starch is not broken down in the small intestine, but passes into the large intestine where fermentation takes place. Resistant starch contributes to the production of short-chain fatty acids, which are food for intestinal cells, contributing to the health of the gastrointestinal tract.
How many bananas should you eat for breakfast?
There are no rules, except to eat the amount until you feel full. The Japanese also have the 80/20 rule, because they believe that a person should never overeat, that is, completely fill his stomach with food.
“Eight parts of a full stomach sustain a man, two parts sustain a doctor.” That’s why many eat only 80% of what is served, while returning 20%.
It is best to drink a glass of lukewarm water in the morning on an empty stomach to start the metabolism. Wait half an hour and eat a banana. If you’re still hungry after 20 minutes, eat another banana. It is especially important that bananas are eaten exclusively in their raw form.
The book states that people should not consume milk and alcohol during the diet, that the last meal should be before 8 p.m., that going to bed by midnight is mandatory because the link between obesity and going to bed late has already been proven.
For lunch and dinner, eat a meal of your choice, and if you get hungry between meals, eat some fruit.
